Our Investment Committee will review and approve all of Grow Michigan’s applications for investments.  It is composed of independent, experienced investment and credit professionals.

    Investment Committee Chair

    Rich is the Chairman of InSite Capital – a subsidiary of Chemical Financial Corporation. InSite develops and finances historically significant buildings and affordable housing projects in the Midwest. Rich is the founder of Lake Michigan Financial Corporation that was established in 1998 and merged with Chemical in 2015. He currently serves on the board of directors of Chemical Financial Corporation, Riverview Development Group and chairs the Holland/Zeeland Community Foundation Oversight Board for the MSU Bio-economy Institute. He is on the investment committee of Grow Michigan – a Michigan based private subordinated debt fund. Rich holds a B.A. from Alma College and an M.A. from Western Michigan University.

     

     

  • Peter E. Mogk

    Peter E. Mogk is a Senior Partner with Huron Capital Partners, an operationally-focus private equity firm which invests in well-run, niche companies in diversified sectors of the middle market. Prior to joining Huron, Mr. Mogk was Vice President and Treasurer of Penske Corporation, a privately-held investment group. Prior to Penske, he held senior management positions with Nesbitt Burns Securities, Inc., the investment banking division of the Bank of Montreal (Chicago), and The Northern Trust Company.

    Mr. Mogk has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and an M.B.A. from The University of Chicago with concentrations in finance and economics.

    Kevin Nelson is the Chief Executive Officer of The Gemini Group, a privately held group of companies with holdings in the manufacturing, banking, entertainment, real estate and energy industries. Prior to joining Gemini, Mr. Nelson was a SVP Middle Marketing Lending for Comerica Bank and the Founder and SVP of GMAC Business Credit.

    Mr. Nelson received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Michigan State University.

     

  • Thomas J. Bieke

    Thomas J. Bieke

    INVESTMENT COMMITTEE MEMBER

    Thomas J. Bieke is Managing Director and Chief Credit Officer for The Private Bank in Chicago, a publicly-traded commercial bank with approximately $20 billion in assets which, in the first quarter of 2017, will be acquired by Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. He has spent the last 35+ years in middle market commercial banking working for American National Bank & Trust Co. of Chicago, LaSalle Bank (a subsidiary of Netherlands-based ABN AMRO Bank) and Fifth Third Bank. While at Fifth Third, Tom formed and lead the new National Commercial Banking unit to establish a new presence for the Bank in five northeast and southeast markets.

    Tom received his Bachelor of Arts Degree (Economics) from Kalamazoo College in 1980 and his Master in Business Administration from the University of Chicago in 1991.

    Jim Mack serves as Executive Vice President – Chief Lending Officer at Independent Bank. He oversees all aspects of Commercial Lending including loan origination, approval, credit administration and operations. Prior to joining Independent Bank in 2009, he had been with Comerica for 25 years, most recently serving as Senior Vice President – Credit Administration for the national divisions of Business

    Banking, Private Banking and SBA Lending. Mr. Mack received his Bachelors of Business Administration from Western Michigan University.

    Mr. O’Keefe is recognized as an expert in the fields of strategic advisory services, corporate reorganization, debt restructuring, turnaround consulting, refinancing solutions, due diligence support, valuation and litigation support.  Mr. O’Keefe has been approved by the U.S. Department of Justice to act as a Chapter 11 trustee and has performed as a court appointed receiver for numerous operating companies. For over 30 years, Mr. O’Keefe has been active as a financial consultant and turnaround advisor to under-performing businesses in various industries including, retail, construction, automotive, manufacturing, and real estate, and has successfully completed assignments in out-of-court and Chapter 11 restructurings. He is an advisor to financial institutions in complex workouts and asset recovery strategies.

    Mr. O’Keefe is qualified in the area of litigation support services and has been accepted as an expert in federal and state court matters involving lost profits, valuation and economic damages. He is one of a handful of experts recognized by the Institute of Business Appraisers as a business valuator accredited in litigation. Prior to forming O’Keefe & Associates, Mr. O’Keefe was a former partner at Deloitte & Touche where he was in charge of the Detroit offices Middle Market department. Subsequent to Deloitte & Touche, he was a Chief Financial Officer of a residential development company in Michigan and was a partner in a turnaround consulting firm.

    Mr. O’Keefe is a member of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA), American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA), and Institute of Business Appraisers (IBA).

    Mr. O’Keefe currently serves as the President of the Detroit Athletic Club and is a past President of the Detroit Chapter of the TMA. He is a member emeritus for the Michigan State University’s Department of Accounting and Information Systems, as well as a past advisory board member of the University of Detroit Turnaround Management Program, Cleary University, and Oakland University’s Finance and Accounting Department. Mr. O’Keefe is a frequent guest lecturer and writer. He has been quoted in publications and has appeared on television and radio stations to discuss issues on automotive, real estate and retail industries. Mr. O’Keefe was honored with the Leadership Achievement Award and was also named one of the top 100 restructuring and turnaround professionals by the Global M&A Network in 2016. He has received the Outstanding Individual Contribution Award by the TMA, the Cleary Business Medal of Honor as an outstanding businessman, and the Small Business Administration’s Financial Services Champion of the Year Award presented by former Governor Jennifer Granholm. Irish America recognized Mr. O’Keefe as one of the top 100 businessmen in 2013 and 2016. Under his direction, his firm has been recognized by the M&A Advisor as Accounting/Due Diligence Firm of the Year, the M&A Global Network as Boutique Turnaround Consulting Firm of the Year, and was awarded Turnaround of the Year-Middle Market by the M&A Advisor and Turnaround Management Association. In 2016 the firm was awarded Real Estate Deal of the Year, Restructuring Deal of the Year, Community Revival Restructuring of the Year, and Chapter 11 Restructuring Deal of the Year.
